I absolutely love Pai (NOT Pie).
This small (though its actually rather large inside) Northern Thai restaurant on Duncan St is one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been to. The interior makes you feel like you're in a different place from the concrete jungle that is Toronto. The menu offers up traditional Northern style Thai food similar to that of Khao San Road (also down the street).
I ordered the Pad Gra Pow and the Gaeng Kiaw Wan (with shrimp). Had some appetizers like the wings and skewers and they were very good. The wings were a very savory sweet and come with an even sweeter sauce (which was unnecessary in my eyes). The wings are slightly char-grilled and come sticky, so not your breaded kind here. Though they do have some crunch with garlic chips thrown atop.
The Pad Gra Pow is incredible as it is stir fried pork with basil and oyster sauce with jasmine rice and a fried egg. The egg is cooked runny so that it can be used to spread all over the goodness below. The pork fat is omnipresent in the dish and every bite gives you a bit of pork flavor. Love how well everything melts together into one seamless dish.
The Gaeng Kiaw Wan is Thai green curry that comes served in a Coconut, with thai basil, green peppers, and your choice of meat. The shrimp pieces, though not many, were rather large. The curry itself tasted great. You can really taste the coconut which is what makes Thai curry one of my favorites.
Do make reservations as the wait can be intense. The place is very popular and though they have a lounge on the side, there isn't much seating there and wait times can easily exceed an hour. Worth the wait though if you love Thai food.
