Pizzeria Libretto is sometimes referred to as the best Pizza place in all of Toronto. It's reputation is known around the city, so it's a shame its taken me this long to give it a shot. The place is rather small looking from the outside so don't miss it walking by! Inside, it's long and got a nice vintage vibe going. Server was quick and we were seated without any wait at 6pm on a Friday!
We definitely wanted to get some pizzas and try some apps. Their Buttermilk Fried Calamari was insanely good. Not only did this plate come pretty, but the taste backed up the look. The batter was airy and somehow light, yet still stick. The calamari was tender and fresh underneath the batter. The red pepper almond sauce that lies below is also a nice complement to the squid.
We wanted to get 2 pizzas (one white, one red). Both pizzas are cooked in a 900 degree oven for a minute and a half so that the dough comes out slightly charred and chewy. It's AMAZING.
The "bianca" pizza that we got was The Duck Confit Pizza. The duck confit was shredded duck leg meat that was scattered about the pizza with some bosc pears to add a bit of sweet with the savory. I wasn't the biggest fan as not every bite had much except some cheese.
The Nduja Sausage Pizza was a HUGE win. The pizza was a bit oily but I enjoyed it because every bite packed a punch with flavor. The nduja sausage was much spicier than I was ready for (nothing too bad, just caught me off guard). Great flavor and with the basil and tomato sauce...perfection.
Place gets packed to no end on the weekends and Friday nights. They DO NOT take reservations, so if you show up at peak time (around 7pm), don't be surprised to be waiting for a half hour MINIMUM. You can also find parking along the street and directly behind (their is a Green P lot).
Definitely do not miss this place if you like your pizza. You won't be disappointed.
