How can you not go to St. Lawrence Market and grab the Breakfast on a Bun!?
I know peameal bacon sandwiches are all the rage in Toronto, but anything with egg and cheese automatically wins for me. All other options become invisible. Lines are long at this place, but they move very quickly as they have several workers behind the counter taking multiple orders. It's also pretty difficult to find a seat anywhere on a Saturday morning, but the great thing about the sandwich is that you can walk around eating it, all while having hungry onlookers stare at your sandwich like it's Kate Upton in your hand.
Whether you like Paddington's or Carousel Bakery, your ass needs to grab a hold of one of these breakfast sandwiches. It's a great way to start your day off. Warm, lightly buttered bun with slices of peameal bacon, cheddar cheese, and a fried egg on top. The peameal bacon is actually juicy and not overly salty like previous tastings of this Canadian staple. I love the melted cheese as it glues the perfectly fried egg to your peameal. The fried egg is perfect because the yolk is slightly runny, so it's wonderful biting in and getting the cheese and yolk oozing over the meat and bun and into your mouth. The meatiness of the peameal doesn't interfere with the fluff of the bun and the sheer pleasure from eating it is enough to make you think twice about buying two more (and two more again for the road).
Just writing the review makes me want to stand outside St. Lawrence at the buttcrack of dawn tomorrow. Though Toronto has a long way to go to have the peameal sandwich implanted into the culture like Smoked Meat to Montreal, places like these do it justice.
