Tai Ping Hsiang is a small Taiwanese joint in Metro Square by Warden and Steeles in Markham. There are so many Taiwanese places that are tiny spots and this place is no exception as there is really only 2 small tables and is primarily a takeout spot. Lineups were fairly long, and I didn't know what to eat, so I thought I'd give this place a shot.
I do love me some Taiwanese popcorn chicken, so that is exactly what I got here. The menu has several Taiwanese favorites like fried chicken, pork chop, and even pig's blood (gross...). The set up is similar to a cafeteria where you line up with your order and choose your sides from the hot table. I ordered the popcorn chicken dinner bento plate ($6.95) with eggplant, green beans, and boiled cabbage.
The Fried Popcorn chicken was very good. The batter was fluffier rather than crisp, but the seasoning was on point and the meat chunks were rather large. I liked that it was more juicier and had a stronger soy flavor than it being overly dry like lots of other Taiwanese places have their chicken.
Lots of sides to choose from with an emphasis on veggies as opposed to starchy sides. The eggplant was very good. Nice firm eggplant with melt in your mouth insides. The boiled cabbage was OK. Not cooked through entirely so not as tender as I would like it. The green beans were good, with some minced pork and spice. Surprisingly, all three veggie sides I ordered had some good spiciness to it. Was expecting something a bit more dull or mild, so the spicy was a nice touch.
Don't fret if the line is long as it does move fast and the service here is quick and efficient. Not the friendliest, but server friendliness is overrated. As long as they don't make mistakes, I'm good. They take cash only and english is a bit rough, so just be aware. Other than that, enjoy some good takeout.
