Amongst a plethora of dim sum options in the area, Spring Villa has become one of the most popular places for the Chinese brunch favourite. The place is located on Woodbine just south of Denison. Drove by this place plenty of times, so I figured I give it a try.

I may have said this before, but I always judge a dim sum place by their hargow (shrimp dumplings). Spring Villa did a great job with their shrimp dumplings as it was large, but still firm and put together instead of breaking apart under it's own weight. Only problem is I forgot to take a picture....whoops. Moving on...

Shrimp Rice Crepe
Shrimp Rice Crepe

The Shrimp rice crepes were good, but the sauce was terrible. Overly salty with no sweetness. It's hard to mess up because almost every dim sum place does the soy sauce just fine. It's too bad because the shrimp and the rice crepe were cooked perfectly.

We also ordered their Special roast pork buns, because they are quite popular. Flaky with good filling but the bun is rather dry. The pork inside was sweet and steaming hot. The Siu Mai were big and plump, though a bit stale. The fish roe on top was very fishy too. Not the greatest flavor to get a bite of as you dive right into it.

The Beef Tripe was done nicely. Steamed well with good flavor and no large chunks of tripe, which is nice to avoid. Nobody likes eating big chunks of rubber. The chicken feet were great too (not the greatest looking, but their a favorite of mine). The black bean sauce was perfect and consistency was ideal.

Mango Pudding!
Mango Pudding!

The mango pudding dessert comes shaped like a fish. I don't really know why, but at least it's nice to look at. It's covered in a slightly sweet milk (not condensed or evaporated) and had a much more mild mango flavor than I had hoped, but still decent.

If you want to come in for dim sum, be sure to arrive earlier as they gather quite a crowd after 10 am. Best to arrive before 10am so you have a chance at getting their early bird special, which makes their S, M, and L platters all one price ($3 last I checked). Atmosphere is like most Chinese Banquet Halls, though not nearly as large or extravagant. Solid place for dim sum though.
