Fortune House is a Cantonese restaurant around Huntingwood and Birchmount Rd. The restaurant is located in a shopping plaza with great places like Chris Jerk in the same location. However, this little Canto place is a bit dingy on the outside and just as dingy inside. The decor looks rather old, with specials and menu items sprawled on colored paper along the walls (similar to other cheaper Cantonese joints).
We ordered a number of items to try much of what they had. Dishes we ordered included Minced Beef and Egg soup, Crispy Half Chicken, Clams with Black Bean Sauce, Boiled Shrimp, Minced Pork and Green Beans, and Shrimp/Scallops in Salt/Pepper.
We started with the Minced Beef and Egg Soup, and an order of boiled shrimp. The soup was done rather well and they have 2 different sizes. At a lot of Chinese places, the smallest soup is rather large and cheap. Here, the soup was surprisingly just a small bowl for a heftier than normal price. It was done well though with lots of egg whites. The boiled shrimp wasn't very good as it was overcooked and smelled a bit fishy (probably re-using the same water to continuously boil shrimp).
The minced pork with green beans were great. This was the best dish we had that night. The green beans were crisp but salted just right, while the minced pork added great porky and fatty flavor. The clams in black bean sauce was good, but the clams never soaked in much of the sauce. It was almost like clams with a side of sauce as opposed to it being one infused dish. Clams were large and fresh though.
The crispy chicken was mediocre. The skin was good and salty, but the meat was overly dry and some pieces were still a bit pink (and bloody - which I've seen in some other places, but not to this degree). Threw out some of the pieces cause we couldn't take that. The shrimp and scallops in salt and pepper were done well enough. The batter wasn't very crisp, but the spices were good. Nice portion of shrimp and scallops equally as well.
I was hoping for a good experience because Cantonese places are not as common as I'd like them to be and this place was so close to home. Unfortunately, the food was rather meh, while the decor and overall feel of the place makes it a big too grungy for me. I like the cheaper prices but otherwise, there are other places to go than here.
