Basically a landmark in New York City. This is probably the most favorite restaurant to get the most famous dish in the most famous city in all of the US. The Deli sandwich at Katz Deli is a rite of passage for many New Yorkers it seems. Maybe the locals love it or grow weary of it, but it isn't going away. This place is New York City.
This restaurant itself looks unassuming and small on the outside. The inside is huge. It looks its own food hall. When you enter, you could get full-service or you could go to the deli counter yourself and wrestle for a table. There are multiple "cutters" and each line is equally as long. When you do go up and order though, make it quick, and be sure to tip.
There are not too many choices, but more than I anticipated. For me it was simple, I was either getting Pastrami or the corned beef. I couldn't decide so I got both. The pastrami was the sandwich I was most looking forward to. It didn't disappoint. The pastrami is spiced a bit more heavier than the corned beef. The bark on the exterior is a beautiful sight and the spice rub is obviously a family secret of theirs. The sandwich is piled high and has a wonderful smoky taste. They're served on rye bread unless otherwise specified and mustard is not hard to find either.
The Corned Beef sandwich is a bit saltier and juicier. The more "wet" of the two, this sandwich isn't seasoned as well as the pastrami but still packs a good bit of flavor. Their corned beef is apparently cooked a much slower process than most places, which leaves that extra bit of moistness.
Lineups can get pretty insane. The price tag on these sandwiches are just as insane. Each sandwich hovers around $20, though you could technically share one if needed. They are big, they are meaty, and they are filling. Service is super fast and the cutters are quite friendly. You get to try each piece before they serve it too. Once you're done eating, you can just pay at the counter by the exit and be on your merry way.
