When I saw a smoked meat shop had opened in Markham, I didn’t really bat an eye. But when I heard the guy working there had worked at Schwartz’s for over a decade and a half…I lost my mind.

I came here after a media event next door. As soon as I walked in, it just felt right. I’m not always the biggest fan of smoked meat, but being that I haven’t had a good one in a while, I found myself a bit more excited than I expected. The place is rather small and hidden in a plaza surrounded by mainly Chinese and Indian communities. Though small, it still had roughly 6-7 tables and a long countertop for seating.

I ordered the most appropriate thing there, the Smoked Meat Sandwich ($8.99). As I watched him carve the beautiful cuts of brined brisket, I realized that they did theirs a bit different here. They didn’t ask me the fatty level I wanted. Instead, he cut slices off a lean brisket AND cut some slices of fatty brisket. And honestly…that is how I want all my smoked meat sandwiches moving forward.

It’s all piled high atop two slices of rye bread and squirted with a pitiful amount of mustard (I need more! And they provide mustard at the table so no reason to fret). The lean cut of smoked meat was tasty and had all the richness of the brine but not overly salty and tender to boot. The fatty pieces were just so juicy and flavorful that it needed that rye bread just to give the bite a firmer texture as a whole. The entire experience was fantastic.

Some of the other foodies got a smoked meat poutine. And though I hate flaccid Montreal style fries, it looked and smelled incredible. Fat chunks of cheese curds and ladled on the gravy. They were NOT shy about the smoked meat (as pictured). It’s almost as though we were in Montreal for a second.

I know it might be recency bias here, but this is my favorite smoked meat sandwich, possibly ever. (Sorry Schwartz’s). The fact that people had to go to places like Wolfies, Centre Street, etc for smoked meat and paying an arm and leg (some are ridiculously high), this is the solution. For under $10, you could have the best smoked meat sandwich in Toronto. Hopefully, they keep this kind quality up. If so, I will have to make excuses to come over this way more often.
