Union Chicken is a rotisserie chicken restaurant at Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke. Located right at the south end of Sherway Gardens, the restaurant is pretty cool. Very warm and inviting inside with a peek into the chickens cooking on the rotisserie. Menu is basically chicken everything from dinner plates to sandwiches and some Southern influenced sides.
We ordered Buttermilk Fried Chicken to start. The dish consists of 4 pieces of battered chicken thigh that sits on a layer of gravy and hot sauce mixture. The chicken itself was rather thin, and not very meaty. The batter was crisp and crunchy, which is nice, but doesn't do the chicken any favors. The gravy and hot sauce mixture is nice, but would prefer the peri-peri sauce that accompanies the table.
Uncle Ray's Lightning Chicken is a special dish that is not on the menu. You need to ask for it and is influenced by Nashville Hot Chicken. Using Habanero hot sauce, it is coated in it. Then, it is topped with sliced pickles and served on top of a slice of white bread. The chicken is spicy and if you're not careful, that heat will linger. Same as the fried chicken as it's battered thigh meat that is doused in it.
We also got Biscuits and Triple Cooked Fries. The biscuits are small, but flaky and buttery. The butter that accompanies it has a bit of a kick and was so good. The triple cooked fries are a thicker cut fry that comes with a very addictive aioli.
We were seated at the bar because the wait for a table was close to an hour on a Friday night (crazy but understandable). The bar seats were seemingly open, so my party of 3 had no problems at all. Still full service. The servers were busy but still friendly and efficient. The food here is decent enough, albeit a bit pricey. The concept isn't a very new one, but they do drive a crazy crowd. Worth checking out if you enjoy chicken as much as I do.
